Olive Oil Lake Bafa to New York

At Lake Bafa It is not just the views and scenery that are unique and quality.
The area is famous for many things and one of those is the olive oil it produces.
On a recent visit to our partners at Hotel Silva Oliva we were informed that they are trying to get that
internationally recognised
They have been accepted as an entrant to the prestigious New York Olive Oil competion
for 2015 to find the best olive oils from around the world.

Florian Koch who is the motivation behind this bid seems to be a complete “food scientist”
They produce many other local food products and the jams and marmalade are the taste of freshness.
He explained that for years his family have used there own produced oil in their kitchen at the Hotel
and restaurant and its quality was the cornerstone of many of their local dishes
The oil this year is particularly good cold pressed and unfiltered delivering extreme quality with a unique taste
The Memecik olives on his farm also have the advantage of being on trees very close to the lake so moisture levels
are high and he produces the oil without any additional water added.
The olives come from trees up to 300 years old and in the locality the local villagers revere
this area as one of the best tastes we hope they agree in New York.
This year Florian and his company will create the brand Silva Oliva and will sell it to visitors
and tourists also online to the world at www.oliveoilnatural.com and on the brand website www.silvaoliva.com
This is a major promotion for the area as a whole and can spread the Lake Bafa taste and more around the globe
This season there will be tasting events at the Hotel and restaurant

Lake Bafa Petzl Roc Trip Description

“Bafa Lake, an ocean of problems
The fields of granite and gneiss boulders that have rolled down from Mount Atmos spread as far as the eye can see around the village of Kapikiri. Bafa Lake, once a gulf of the Aegean Sea until it was filled by sediment from the Meanderos River, sheltered the Port of Heraclea. From lakeside wilderness campground, climbers can go off in search of fantastic problems in a spectacular setting.”

Promote Protect Stop Pollution Bafa Lake Turkey

Many would prefer to visit this natural water Park than the concrete jungles of mass tourism. It has history that predates many countries. So the appropriate authorities and guardians have a moral duty to clean and protect this National Park.

It merits major investment from all agencies private and public it is a great advert for Turkey if protected and gives rise to tourism that is sustainable and a growth area.

It should be seen as a fantastic investment for tourism and future generations.

Two thousand years ago, Lake Bafa was a bay in the Aegean Sea, known as the Gulf of Latmus. The remains of ancient Byzantine monasteries can still be found on its islets and nearby mountains. Today, the lake in Turkey’s Muğla Province is home to remarkable biodiversity: 261 bird species, 25 plant species, 22 reptile species, and 19 mammal species. But all that is under threat. The lake’s waters have started turning green and foamy thanks to salinization and polluting discharge from factories and fish farms.

Pollution is multi-faceted problem

Untreated waste water from factories in the town of Bafa, which lies east of the lake, is being dumped in the lake, according to Turkish paper Hürriyet Daily News.

At the lake’s western end, a Kilic  fish farm is also releasing waste into the water.

The great scandal of this is that the government deemed the waste too toxic to go in the sea but allows it into a closed water system Bafa Lake

Plans for a second farm are reportedly underway, according to A professor of aquaculture and a spokesman for Turkey’s Ecosystem Protection and Nature-Lovers’ Association (EKODOSD).

Perhaps most destructive, to Lake Bafa is the main water source, the Büyük Menderes River

It has become increasingly salty ever since it was diverted for irrigation use in 1985. The salinization of the river and the Büyük Menderes Lake have lowered the fertility of nearby fields, and have added an unpleasant odor to the lake, causing it to be less attractive destination for tourists.

Pollution solution?

Turkey’s state water works (DSİ)  should treat Bafa Lake with biological cleaning systems to eradicate the pollution. Major efforts should also be made to raise the oxygen levels by enviromentally friendly methods

There is a precedent for what happens if the pollution is not stopped that is it could turn into another Büyük Menderes Lake, with the damage from the pollution spreading far and wide around the region.

Bafa Lake’s water ecosystem the environs, the river basin and soil structure is the best and cheapest purifier for the environment,The natural solutions are around it is crucial to implement and enforce them

A team from the DSİ has previously taken samples from Bafa Lake and will tested them to determine the exact causes of the pollution.

In the summer, when Bafa Lake isn’t receiving much fresh water in the form of rain,, the problem  gets much worse. Visually this year 2014 it was evident visually the colour and algae and smell was there for all to see

In solving the pollution at Bafa Lake, Aydin and Mugla authorities would do well to follow the model of another region close by on Turkey’s Aegean coast that is  İzmir.

The Gulf of İzmir was used as an open sewer system beginning in the 60s. But in 2001, İzmir’s municipal government initiated the Big Gulf Project to clean it up. Those efforts are just now paying off, as recent underwater photos showed considerable marine life returning to the previously polluted bay.izmir bay

The İzmir clean-up effort did require major investments by its the government — investments that not every city in Turkey is rich enough to make. But if  the historical value and tourism potential of Bafa Lake and its surrounding nature reserve were quantified, Muğla and Aydin local authorities would find it an investment worth making as well to maintain this and promote this as a premium tourist destination to complement the areas of Mass tourism.

It is a natural Water Park so you could say stop investing in building concrete aqua parks and invest and save this natural asset.

The area has mass tourism this is an area that is sustainable tourism there are settlements that pre date everything in the area so it is a duty of those that can to save this amazing Lake Bafa for future generations

Lake Bafa National Park Turkey Portal

The information portal for  lake bafa national park and the surrounding area is armed with a mission to protect and develop this area of astounding natural beauty and massive historical importance.

The Turkish Government has for some years recognized Bafa Lake as an important location and the aim of the portal is to remind, inform and refresh the status of this location as a natural asset for both Turkey and Worldwide.

We wish to to encourage local and global awareness and attract visitors to see this area of amazing natural beauty

Bafa Lake,  used to be a part of Aegean Sea and turned into a lake as result of the development of Great Menderes Delta.

Lake Bafa  is still one of the most  unspoiled watery areas  in Turkey. Although is under threat from various environmental factors

The maximum depth of the Bafa Lake reaches only 25 meters and the main water sources of the Lake Bafa are the water floods of Great Menderes (Büyük Menderes) River, and the underground waters coming from the mountains of the surrounding area.

The plant cover around the  lake mainly consists of tamarisks, pine trees, and olive groves.

The Lake shelters the ecosystem characteristics of Great Menderes delta and because of that  it provides a winter location and a haven for reproduction for many bird species many of which are in the danger of extinction.

Some of the main bird species in the Bafa Lake Natural Park are pelican, dwarf cormorant and sea eagle. The Park provides a winter haven for up to 300.000 different birds.

There are 700 kinds of plankton in the Lake, and a vast variety of water plants.

Therefore this causes many fish species to live in the lake.

The cultural and historical values of the Bafa Lake are substantial

Heraclia Antique City is within the boundaries of the Lake Bafa National Park.

On the south west foot of Beşparmak Mountains is the Antique City there are many historical buildings including Athena Temple, an Agora, Council Building, Public Baths, Theatre, Nymphaion (fountain building), and Endymion Temple.

In order to protect the history and nature  of the area, in 1994, 12281 hectares were made the status of Natural Park.

That status is merited to protect this outstanding site of natural beauty and substantial historical importance

Today Bafa Lake has environmental problems from modern day influences and it is essential to protect this natural treasure for future generations.

It is  crucial that lake bafa national park is preserved as it can be seen as a benchmark of the concern in this changing nation Turkey.
